Turns out I’m still bad at homework

Book club meets next Wednesday.  We’re reading Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.  The book is broken into three sections – I’m still on section one.  This may prove to be a problem.

I think the problem is I heard horrible reviews before I started reading it, so I have a lack of hope that it’s going to get better.  Right now I feel a bit bored by the whole thing.  And yet, they’re making a movie, it was all the rage a few years ago, Oprah was all over it I believe.  So that makes me think – am I too young for this book?

With the big birthday fast approaching I’m fine with being too young for things.  But I don’t think that’s it.  I think it’s that to this point I find her self-indulgent – which is mean and judgmental of me and the complete point of the book – why is it not okay to be self-indulgent, why is that a bad thing.  And it’s not that I think she’s “undeserving” of a year of self-discovery, by all means go ahead, discover yourself.  But, why did everyone love reading about your year?

Maybe it’ll get better… I am only on page 83 after all.  And Oprah rarely leads me astray… and Julia Roberts is awesome so why would she sign on to star in a terrible movie – Pretty Woman just wouldn’t do that to me.

Alright, I’ll keep reading.

Anyone out there that has read this book and can either give me some encouragement to keep going – or give me a recap so I can cheat my way through Book Club, comment away.

  1. I believe Tina Fey sums it up perfectly in “Date Night” – read the first 30 pages and the last page. By my count you only have one more page to go!
